KJV, ASV “valiant ones”; NASB, NIV “brave men”); “priests,” “residents [of Jerusalem].” The present translation assumes that the term is synonymous with “messengers of peace,” with which it corresponds in the parallel structure of the verse.

[33:7]  12 tn Heb “messengers of peace,” apparently those responsible for negotiating the agreements that have been broken (see v. 8).

[35:8]  13 tc The Hebrew text reads literally, “and there will be there a road and a way, and the Way of Holiness it will be called.” וְדֶרֶךְ (vÿderekh, “and a/the way”) is accidentally duplicated; the Qumran scroll 1QIsaa does not reflect the repetition of the phrase.

[35:8]  14 tn The precise meaning of this line is uncertain. The text reads literally “and it is for them, the one who walks [on the] way.” In this context those authorized to use the Way of Holiness would be morally upright people who are the recipients of God’s deliverance, in contrast to the morally impure and foolish who are excluded from the new covenant community.

[35:8]  15 tn In this context “fools” are those who are morally corrupt, not those with limited intellectual capacity.

[37:20]  16 tn The parallel text in 2 Kgs 19:19 reads, “that you, Lord, are the only God.”

[37:25]  17 tc The Hebrew text has simply, “I dug and drank water.” But the parallel text in 2 Kgs 19:24 has “foreign waters.” זָרִים (zarim, “foreign”) may have accidentally dropped out of the Isaianic text by homoioteleuton (cf. NCV, NIV, NLT). Note that the preceding word, מַיִם (mayim, “water) also ends in mem (ם). The Qumran scroll 1QIsaa has “foreign waters” for this line. However, in several other passages the 1QIsaa scroll harmonizes with 2 Kgs 19 against the MT (Isa 36:5; 37:9, 20). Since the addition of “foreign” to this text in Isaiah by a later scribe would be more likely than its deletion, the MT reading should be accepted.

[37:31]  18 tn Heb “The remnant of the house of Judah that is left will add roots below and produce fruit above.”

[40:17]  19 tn Heb “[as derived] from nothing and unformed.”

[45:2]  20 tc The form הֲדוּרִים (hadurim) makes little, if any, sense here. It is probably a corruption of an original הָרָרִים (hararim, “mountains”), the reduplicated form of הָר (har, “mountain”).

[45:2]  21 tn That is, on the gates. Cf. CEV “break the iron bars on bronze gates.”

[65:6]  22 tn Heb “Look, it is written before me.”

[65:6]  23 tn Heb “I will pay back into their lap.”
